Complete Wedding Budget Guide – Part 6: The Honeymoon

Are you thinking there’s not going to be enough money in your budget to have the honeymoon you always dreamed of?

What can often seem like a very healthy wedding budget can often get eaten up by hidden expenses. And for some couples, this can mean their honeymoon has to be put on hold, or in some cases cancelled.

But there are ways, with the help of your family and friends that you can have the honeymoon of your dreams.

In these modern times, many couples live together, often for a good few years before they decide to get married. So if this is you, then no doubt you have all the towels, bedding, pots and pans and other household items that you need.

So when guests ask what you would like as a wedding gift, it’s always difficult to know how to ask for cash gifts, but it is becoming more acceptable now to invite them to give you a gift you can put towards your honeymoon. And there are several ways you can do this:

A Wishing Well

Having a wedding wishing well is becoming very popular. Guests put cards containing cash gifts into the wishing well as they arrive at the wedding reception. As their card, complete with cash or cheque falls into the well, they make a wish.

One of the best ways to let your guests know is to build a wedding website where they can find details. And of course, your parents and your maid of honour can also spread the word.

If you find asking for actual cash a little bit difficult, them maybe you could use a rhyme. I’ve got 2 you can use that are light-hearted. Here’s the first one:

More than kisses so far we’ve shared,
Our home has been made with Love and Care,
Most things we need we’ve already got,
And in our home we can’t fit a lot!
A wishing well we thought would be great,
(But only if you wish to participate),
A gift of money is placed in the well,
Then make a wish . but shhh don’t tell!
While enjoying our honeymoon we’ll feel brand new,
We can look back and say it was all thanks to you!
And in return for your kindness, we’re so sure,
That one day soon you will get what you wished for.

And here’s another good one you can use. This is my favourite of the 2, and actually this is the one that I used for my own wedding, so it has my highest recommendation:

We’ve lived together quite a while
with all our pots and pans,
and as we don’t need homely gifts
we’ve got another plan!

We know it’s not traditional
but an awful lot more fun,
to have items on our wedding list
to help us catch some sun!

So if you’d like to give a gift
and send us on our way
a donation to our honeymoon
would really make our day!!

Gift Certificates

Many travel agents now sell gift certificates which guests can give the bride and groom as a wedding gift. So if you have already planned your honeymoon, but don’t have the money for the little extras, then this is perfect for you.

Just give your family and friends a list of some of the ways they can make your honeymoon into a dream.

  • room upgrades
  • limousine airport transfers to your hotel
  • flight upgrades
  • VIP dining package
  • excursions
  • snorkeling

When my husband and I got married, we didn’t need presents for our home –  we had lived together for two years. So our lovely families and our friends clubbed together and upgraded our economy flights to first class.

Flying first class from London to New York made my wedding and my honeymoon extra special.

Find A Bargain

There are always plenty of bargains to be found when you are looking for a cheap holiday – it’s just a case of tracking them down. And of course, a good place to start is the Internet, where you can often find a last minute deal.

Sometimes it’s possible to save money by booking a package deal, and leaving choice of destination and accommodation to the travel agent. This is fine if you are flexible about where you go.

If you really want to go abroad, and would rather pick your own holiday, then check out the exchange rates and go where you will get the most value for money.

Of course, the cheapest option is to spend your honeymoon here on your own shores. And there are lots of different options, such as a seaside hotel or a country cottage, or a spa hotel.

Don’t forget to mention you are on your honeymoon when you book your hotel or cottage – there’s always a chance you might be offered a free upgrade to the honeymoon suite, or even a bottle of champagne or some fruit.

Whichever way you choose to spend your honeymoon, remember it’s your first holiday as man and wife, so it’s very special.

Unwind With These 7 Great Wedding-Themed Films

If your wedding is now just weeks or even days away, you might feel like you could do with some stress relief. So how about a girlie night? Invite your best friends, hire a film, open a bottle of wine and ban all talk of your wedding for the whole evening.

So here are 7 of my favourite wedding – themed films:

1. Father Of The Bride

This is Steve Martin at his absolute best. He plays George Banks, the father trying to come to terms with the fact that his daughter is all grown up, and what is even worse, she wants to get married.

She wants a grand wedding with all the trimmings, organised by a planner, but he only wants to pay for a wedding on a shoestring budget.

2. My Best Friend’s Wedding

Julianne Potter ( played by Julia Robers), is invited to the wedding of an ex boyfriend. But she suddenly realises she still loves him, and decides that by hook or by crook she will get him back.

But his wedding is only days away.

3. Very Bad Things

This film is a black comedy about a bachelor party that goes terribly wrong. The groom-to-be, the best man and three friends head to a hotel in Vegas with a plan to drink and gamble the weekend away.

When a hooker turns up, things start to go terribly wrong, and the plot takes many surprising twists and turns and things go from bad to worse.

4. The Wedding Planner

If you are a fan of romantic comedies then you will love this film. Jennifer Lopez plays Mary, a wedding planner who has been asked to plan the biggest wedding of her career. But just days before the wedding she has fallen in love with the groom.

Of course it’s a bit predictable, but hey, who doesn’t enjoy a happy ending?

5. Runaway Bride

This film sees Julia Roberts and Richard Gere back together again. This time she plays a woman who has run away from three previous weddings and he is a reporter who wants to write about her.

But as with most romantic comedies, it’s quite predictable. But definitely still worth watching.

6. Four Weddings And A Funeral

This film follows the charming Charles, played by Hugh Grant, who always seems to be turning up at other people’s weddings. If you haven’t yet watched this film, then you are in for a treat.

But be prepared. There will be moments when you will be doubled up with laughter, and others when you will be reaching for the Kleenex.

7. Pretty Woman

Although this film has been around since 1990, it just seems to have stood the test of time. We’ve all seen it – some of us more than once, but we always seem to be able to watch it again.

Maybe the story is a bit far fetched, a bit of a fairy tale, but still thoroughly enjoyable, however many times you have seen it.

Till next time,
Take care

Jennifer.

7 Outfits For The Mother Of The Bride

Your wedding day is going to be the best day of your life, and of course you are going to look amazing in your gorgeous wedding gown.

But don’t forget there is another person who wants to look fantastic on your wedding day – and that is your mother.

It’s a big day for her – her daughter is getting married and she is going to feel very proud of you. So the outfit she chooses to wear has to be very special indeed.

Take a look at these 7 beautiful outfits which I think are just perfect for a mother of the bride.

1. Simply Elegant

Beautiful silver grey fitted dress with matching jacket. This figure flattering outfit is made from luxurious silk, and teamed with a matching hat makes it a perfect outfit for any wedding.

2. O So Chic

Dress and coat set made from beautiful silk and ideal for a more petite lady. The contrasting stripes on the skirt and the cuffs give this outfit a really young feel.

3. Smart And Timeless

Gorgeous black shift dress and box style jacket with contrast trim and diamante beads. The style and clean lines of this two piece means it is perfect for elongating the figure.

4. Something Sophisticated

What bride’s mother wouldn’t be proud to wear this stunning outfit at her daughter’s wedding? A cream and black round neck dress with cream jacket, with a black design around the lower half of the jacket and around the bottom of the three quarter length sleeves. Absolutely stunning!

5. Classic Design

This beautiful silk dress and coat two piece is almost identical to the outfit my mother chose to wear at my wedding, and she looked amazing. The cut and style of both the dress and the coat easily cover any lumps and bumps in the tummy area.

6. Pretty In Pink

A dress and coat in a soft pastel pink – just perfect for the mother who prefers a more classic design. The looser fit dress and the edge to edge jacket with long sleeves make this a stylish, yet comfortable outfit.

7. Skirt Suit With Shawl Collar

This three piece skirt suit is perfect for the bride’s mother who prefers a longer length outfit. The suit consists of a long embroidered skirt and top, and a plain jacket with contrast embroidered trim on the collar and cuffs. This beautiful silk suit is elegant and yet understated.
