7 Ways To Have A Winter Wedding

My best friend Amanda and her boyfriend Dan have just become engaged. They are planning to marry in December 2012.

Amanda wants a white wedding – but when she says white wedding, she doesn’t mean donning a white dress and walking up the aisle in her local church. No. The white wedding she has in mind means getting married in the snow.

It’s a great idea, and as with all destination weddings, it’s a wedding and a honeymoon all rolled into one.

And the best part is, not only am I going to be her chief bridesmaid, but she has asked me to help plan the wedding.

So during the past week I have done some research and I have come up with what I think are 7 great options for a ‘white wedding’

1. Austria

If you’re planning a destination wedding in the snow, then Austria is an excellent choice. Packages can be tailor-made to suit your requirements but most packages include:

  • a wedding planner
  • choice of wedding venue
  • horse drawn carriage to ceremony
  • wedding music
  • bridal bouquet
  • flowers
  • photography

2. The Canadian Rockies

If you are looking for a really stunning location with incredible views and surrounded by snow, then look no further than the beautiful Canadian Rockies. This is a place with scenery like you won’t see anywhere else in the world.

Several wedding packages are available but a typical one, such as the Lake Louise package will give you:

  • services of a wedding planner
  • choice of venue
  • civil ceremony including licence
  • bridal bouquet
  • groom’s buttonhole
  • bottle of sparkling wine

3. Italy

The Italian Alps must surely be one of the most romantic and magical destinations for a winter wedding. With it’s lakes, mountain peaks, and snowy landscapes, Italy in winter is truly a winter wonderland. There are wedding packages here to suit all budgets, and a typical package here in the Alps would include:

  • luxury hotel with view of the alps
  • services of a wedding planner
  • wedding ceremony in an historical chateaux
  • photographer
  • flowers
  • mountain candlelit dinner

4. Lapland

If you are looking for a truly unique wedding in a fairytale setting, then this is what you will find in Lapland. Think log fires, igloos, reindeer sleighs, husky sleds, snow-capped trees, log cabins, Chapels carved from ice.

And for even more romance why not choose to marry in a Lappish Shaman’s hut in the middle of a snow covered pine forest? Make your vows in the little room lit by twinkling lanterns and candles. Drink a toast to each other by a log fire before going to sleep on cosy reindeer pelts.

5. Switzerland

The village of Zermatt in Switzerland is the choice of many couples who are seeking a winter-white wedding. This quaint Swiss mountain village, with it’s cobbled streets is just perfect for a small, intimate wedding.

Weddings here are conducted in the Riffelberg church which holds up to 20 people, and is situated near to the Matterhorn.  Because cars are not allowed in this village, you can choose either to walk to the church, or you can arrive for your wedding on skis.

6. Aspen, USA

If you want to combine a beautiful snow white wedding with a ski-ing honeymoon, then you should seriously consider Aspen, Colorado as your destination.

With its beautiful mountain scenery, wonderful shopping, restaurants, and hotels Aspen has to be a great place to get married. Weddings here are all about luxury.

You can choose to make your vows high up in the mountains, or in one of the luxurious hotels. Or you may want to step back in time and be driven in a horse drawn sleigh through the snow clad Aspen trees to your wedding venue.

7. Slovenia

If you want to be truly spoiled on your wedding day then this is the perfect destination for you. The snow- topped peaks and breathtaking scenery make the most amazing backdrop for wedding photographs. A typical wedding package here includes:

  • a wedding planner
  • transport to ceremony in horse drawn carriage
  • register office ceremony
  • bridal bouquet
  • photographer and 30 photographs
  • wedding cake and wine
  • room upgrade
