Every wedding needs a wedding cake. It’s part of the wedding tradition and it’s one of the most photographed parts of a wedding, second only to the bride’s dress.

But it can come as quite a shock when you realise just how expensive they can be. Luckily there are ways you can save money on your wedding cake, and still have a centrepiece you can be proud of. Take a look at some of the ways you can save a fortune on your wedding cake:

Make Your Own Wedding Cake

Please don’t think this idea is crazy and dismiss it right away. It’s not as difficult as you might think, and many couples make their own wedding cakes and are very happy with the decision.

All you need is a good recipe, a cake mixer, and a bit of practice. You’ll also need to hire a cake stand and a knife to cut your cake.

Making the basic cake is pretty straightforward and after a few practice runs you should be able to turn out a pretty mean cake. A traditional fruit cake is probably the easiest way to go as it can be made up to a month ahead.

So begin by making 3 fruit cakes in varying sizes to stack.

Now the fun bit.

Cover your cakes with a layer of marzipan, then cover them with ready-to-use fondant icing. Wrap a ribbon around the outside of each cake.

Then on the day decorate your cakes with seasonal fruits, flower petals, or sugar roses that are easily available to buy.

Hopefully, now that you’ve read this post, you’ll realise that making your own wedding cake isn’t such a crazy idea after all. It’ll save you a fortune, and as a bonus, you’ll have a wedding cake that is far more personal and meaningful than one that was made by someone else.

Hire A Fake Wedding Cake

Pretty sneaky, eh?

Hiring a fake wedding cake is now a growing trend with couples who want to impress their guests with a multi-tiered wedding cake, but who don’t want to spend a small fortune for the privilege.

The bottom tier is real wedding cake, and the other tiers are made from soft foam covered with fondant icing. Once they’re decorated it’s difficult to believe they’re not real.

Really, there are no negatives to this plan:

  • the cake looks sensational and real – no one will doubt it
  • you’ll save as much as 75% if you fake the top 3 tiers
  • everyone will still get a piece of cake and love it

Decorate A Store Bought Cake

Many high-end departmental stores now offer a large range of ready-made wedding cakes in all shapes and sizes. You decide which style, the number of tiers, and the decoration you would like, and your cake is ready for you to collect 7 days later.

Once you have your cake home, you can spend as much time as you like making it look like a wedding cake that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. And even though you had the basic cake made for you, your unique decoration will make it personal and more meaningful to you (this is just like the idea I mentioned to you earlier about making the cake yourself, except this time you only have to decorate it!).

Cupcake Tower

This is a modern alternative to the traditional wedding cake. Most wedding cake bakers now make wedding cup cakes, and serving these at your reception will save a lot of money.

But you can save even more money if you get your friends to rally round and help you make a big batch of fairy cakes. Decorate them in the colors of your wedding theme, and display them in a tower or on a tiered cake stand.

Once again, this will add a very personal touch to your wedding cake, and your friends will enjoy the day even more knowing that they got involved in something as important as your wedding cake.
