The First Seven Things You Must Do After Getting Engaged

So, your boyfriend’s just proposed. Now the panic sets in. Because if you’re like most girls then you’re probably all over the place right now, not knowing what to do first, or how to start planning for the biggest day of your life.

But you can stop your worrying – I’m here to help. Check out the list below for the 7 things you need to do next to start your wedding planning ball rolling:

1. Announce your engagement

Break the good news to both sets of parents and family and friends – in that order. It’s really important that your parents are the first people you tell. It wouldn’t do for them to hear it second hand from someone else.

2. Plan a budget

Sit down together and work out exactly how much you have to spend on your wedding. Make a list of everything you need to pay for and add 10% for unforeseen expenses. Have a meeting with family members to find out who is paying for what.

3.  Set the date

When you and your husband-to-be come to deciding on a date for your wedding, there are several factors you need to consider:

  • Allow yourselves plenty of time to plan your wedding
  • Decide what time of year you would like to get married
  • Make certain none of your friends are getting married on the day you pick and that none of them are due to have a baby that week

Take all these things into consideration before you set your date.

4. Save the Date

Send save-the-date cards to your guest list. Remember that people arrange other functions and holidays, so as long as they know the date you have set for your wedding they won’t miss your big day.

5. Choose your bridesmaids

Now you need to choose your bridesmaids, and more importantly your maid of honour. After all, she will be the one to help and advise you when you choose your wedding gown, but more important than that, she will be the one who will organise your hen party.

6. Buy some magazines

Buy yourself as many wedding and bridal magazines as you can find. They are full of useful information for couples planning a wedding, and will give you lots of ideas such as:

  • picking a theme for your wedding
  • choosing a style for your wedding dress
  • deciding what color your bridesmaid’s dresses should be
  • which table decorations and settings you would like

7. Relax

Relax, sit back with a glass of wine and dream about the perfect wedding day you are about to plan, and the honeymoon that will be an extension of your wedding day. This will be the first holiday you spend as husband and wife and one you will remember forever.

After you decide to get married it can seem intimidating and scary knowing you have to plan a wedding, and you probably don’t know where to begin. So start by following the tips above and then make some lists of the things that need to be done.

Once you have a plan it won’t seem so daunting. Don’t be afraid to delegate and rope in a few friends and family members to help. Your friends will feel very special if they are invited to join in your wedding preparations and working together will make planning your wedding great fun.

Take care
